Welcome to hanskmeyer.com!

I finally made the jump and bought some server space. (Actually, I’ve had it for about a year, but I finally decided to use it.) The reason I tell everyone is now that I’m no longer a graduate student, Mizzou’s going to cut me off. Really, I just think it’s cool to own my own domain name. Now the SEO experts would say I’d be better off buying givethenetcredit.com or citJresearch.com or onlinejournalismteacher.com (all of which are still available, BTW), but it will be fun directing people to a site that’s the same as my name.

As far as my Mizzou blog is concerned, it’s still available. I’ve heard the university does not stay on top of Web hosting maintenance too well. In case, the admins there ever do take my account down, I’ve archived my posts here.

I’m excited for the new blog because it gives me a chance to test out some of the advanced features of the Web and WordPress. I’m already digging my free theme (I had to write a bunch of new posts to get the “recent posts” line to work). Being able to use PHP and MySQL are a plus, and I’m pretty impressed with how easy BlueHost has made this so far. I can automatically upgrade WordPress when updates come out, and I have access to scores of other open source programs. I’ve already installed LimeSurvey and an auction program that I use to run free agent auctions in my online hockey league.

I can also take full advantage of WordPress widgets, and the first one I downloaded was All-in-one SEO Pack. I’m hoping it will drive a bit more traffic to my site because as I learn more and more about the tenure and promotion process, I realize I need to start taking this stuff seriously. So I hope you enjoy the new blog. I’ll try to keep it updated more frequently.
