I'm an assistant professor at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, where I teach and research how news sites can better reach their audiences. I received my Ph.D. from the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri where I was one of the founding editors of MyMissourian.com, a citizen journalism site for Columbia, Mo. Before graduate school, I worked as a community newspaper editor in Southern Utah and Southern California.

Wordless Weekend: Photo essay, old logos, the real OU

For November, National Blog Posting Month has offered Wordless Weekend to help bloggers keep their post a day pace. While I haven’t even come close to posting every day this month and this post won’t really be wordless, I thought a few observational screenshots were in order today. (Click on the images to see them in full resolution.)

First off, I always suspected Ohio University was the real OU, but now I have proof thanks to an Oklahoma State fan on Saturday’s ESPN College GameDay in Stillwater.

ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit broadcasts live from Stillwater, Okla. during College Gameday Nov. 27, while a fan explains what OU really stands for.

By the way, will someone explain this sign from the same pep rally?

During ESPN's College Gameday, an Oklahoma State fan displayed this sign. Does it mean something or was the fan just being silly?

Next, will someone at the Utah Jazz media relations department please send ESPN the new Jazz logo? I’m sick of seeing highlights with the old mountainy thing.

This screencapture from an online video on the Jazz's Nov. 28 victory over the LA Clippers shows ESPN needs to update its logos.

Finally, will all my hard working and talented photographer friends please tell me whether this really counts as a photo essay? CBS news’ 48 Hours apparently thinks so. BTW, here’s a link to some real photo essays. (The one I remember most one of my friend Jud Burkett’s, but unfortunately, it’s not posted online any more.)

According to CBS's website for 48 Hours Mystery, a bunch of pictures of a porn star constitute a photo essay.
